It is the primary agricultural and trading center in Mindanao and is the country's gateway to the bustling East Asian Growth Area. It is also an international gateway with the opening of the Davao International Airport.
The city is tagged the "Convention City of the South," as it has successfully hosted national and international conferences, assemblies, and sporting events. It is also home to the country's highest peak, Mt. Apo; the rare waling-waling orchid; the exotic durian fruit; and is known to produce export-quality handicrafts.
